"The whole point of giving is to make a difference in the area you are focused on. Suppose I want to clean up the air in California. I could give out grants willy-nilly to worthy organizations that are working on some aspect of the problem. But to really solve the problem, you need to pick a credible path, and align the resources behind the plan. Then you have everyone rowing in the same direction with the same goals." Steve Kirsch
Our Overall Vision
We want a safe and peaceful world, one without the threat of destruction. We want a healthy world, one without disease and without pollution of our air, water and land, and one in which all species have the ability to survive and flourish.
We invest in causes where high-impact, leverageable activities can result in a safer and healthier world. Using whatever means are most effective, we work to solve significant problems and issues that place individuals, the world community, and the world itself at risk.
Vision: Foundation's direction over the next 20-30 years.
Short-term Goals: Focused approach from 2003 through 2007.
Strategies: Three-year targeted plans toward implementing short-term goals. The strategies reflect action by the Board of Directors in October 2006, based on the staff's recommendations.
Effective July 2005, the Foundation’s Board established an operating budget of $1.5 million annually, which is significantly less than previous years’ budgets. While remaining committed to the overall direction established by the strategic plan that was adopted in early 2000, the Board and staff are focused on only a very limited number of short-term goals and strategies.
